Beer has been around for at least 8000 years, placing it among the oldest alcoholic drinks known to man. This tasty concoction is enjoyed year-round with summer ales abundant in the hot weather, pumpkin spice beers in the fall and richer dark winter brews in the cold months. Made from cereal grains, hops, water and yeast, people drink about 35 billion gallons of beer annually. That's a lot of drinkers and Long Island breweries supply a significant portion of those drafts, bottles and cans.
Breweries normally make two kinds of beer, lagers and ales, using a variety of malt and yeast. Lagers are generally lighter and ales darker. Lagers often have a more subtle flavor than ales. LI breweries churn out pretty much every color and flavor of beer you can imagine.
Long Island has some exceptional microbreweries. Blue Point Brewing Company and Southampton Publick House come instantly to mind, amongst many others (full listings below).
